Weather Shift
The last few days have been warm enough to wear a sweatshirt without a coat. At night it rains, waking up plants, melting the hidden ice and the last of the piles of compacted, dirt encrusted snow.
My yard is taking shape. We gathered all the newly downed limbs, cut up sticks and raked up the leaves. Lots to do but also plenty of new discoveries. Our first Spring in the new house and my sun room is filled with tiny growing things. I can’t wait to see what comes up.
I trimmed and cut so much my hands are sore, but the pathways are clear and won’t poke out my eyes when I am walking around, or Shawn’s on the scooter. I cut down the trees trying to grow against the foundation of the house, adjusted and installed downspouts and extensions.
My dad has been helping me get it all done. Not only is he super knowledgable about gardening and growing, but he also has never been afraid to get his hands dirty and he works hard. He is great with a saw, clipper, shovel, or whatever and he enjoys it as much as I do.
We have some interesting holes in our yard, possibly where two old trees once stood, but they are both pretty large, and deep. One I think will be a garden, the other a fire pit. All the leaves I raked from the sides and garden areas don’t fill up one of them. It will be interesting to see how many bags of dirt it will take to fill it up.
My next project will be rocks. I am collecting rocks to make the fire ring, and to outline the garden along with a few bags of dirt. That will be fun and I have a plan.
The big garden over at my folks is a whole different story, but it too is coming together.
