Simple Answers

As a writer, I take on the challenges of my characters, and it is amazing what I have learned. For instance, writing for Grabon and Heron, excellent territory dragons, leadership personified, I came to realize that usually the most complex problems sometimes have elegant and simple answers. While other characters tend to complicate everything, reading this and that into every situation, real leadership is facing reality, boiling it down to necessity, preference, and desired effect. Finding solutions that solve more than one aspect of a challenge and open opportunities instead of limiting options.

As a human living in this world and during these complicated times, I feel we have a lot to learn from the territory dragons of NewEarth, especially those in the Combined Territories. Simple elegant solutions that solve multiple challenges in our modern world.

For instance, the desire by some politicians to limit female voting by changing the rules, making names match, all in an effort to disenfranchise women and put them in a submissive position. This can be solved by women never changing their names. Or if they have, changing them back to the original. Women declare their independence even in marriage, divorce, and remarriage; retaining their identity, at the same time they take the teeth from those who wish to complicate their ability to vote.

Instead of paying the pole tax to produce all the documentation for every move, change the name back to the original, matching the birth certificate, just like men. It simplifies the process while also sending a strong message about the modern woman’s place in society, helping to stabilize lifelong identity.

We all need to think like territory dragons, look for the simple solution that solves more than one problem.
