Rest Areas
Driving across our country gives a traveler a unique view of rest areas. Some had flush toilets, some only mulching toilets and others still with other technologies for processing human waste. The same for sinks, some had fresh water, others had hand sanitizer; we found auto start/shut off on sinks, and push button faucets were popular in one state. Every place we passed there were wind farms, solar stations and signs of conservation.
People from all walks of life stop at rest areas. They were amazingly clean, safe, well lit and friendly. Most had soda machines, air conditioning and outdoor picnic areas. Many people travel with pets and they need a place to walk them and those rest areas make sure they provide clean, safe spaces to do that.
We were not expecting free maps and not every stop had them, but at least one in each state was giving them away and they always had one posted, starring the location you were at. What a handy deal that is. Even with our Garmen always ready to tell us where to go, the paper map is helpful. Maybe because we’re old but old school is nice every now and then.
