Reimagining

I happen to be a huge fan of public education. Not only did I go to public school and then private Universities, but I have spent many wonderful years teaching in public schools, so I know many very talented public educators. That being said, I like the idea of mass education open to everyone and want to include it in my NewEarth world.

Obviously this calls for a completely different form of Education, but with the important ideals covered. Dragon youngsters are not going to be sitting at desks and raising their hands to speak. Psychic human youngsters are not going to be educated separately from dragons and of course paper is a scarce commodity, so realistically the delivery, practice, and exposure of information is going to look very different.

In later stories, the process and institution will begin slowly, highlighting the many benefits to the individuals, the territory, and the continent. The acquisition of knowledge, the exploration of talents, and practice of skills is a huge responsibility. It will of course all begin in Grabon and Heron’s territory. Who should it include in the beginning? What will they teach? Who will be the instructors? Youngsters and youth have very different needs, but is it really better to send the youth out of the territory to wander and learn with no protection, or educate them at home? In the past, all youth are expected to wander, to learn, find their way and discover their place on the planet, their purpose. How can that be done in a single territory?

The challenge of reimagining education is fun, and will hopefully help others read to a happy place.
