Please… Vote!
In my mythical world, humans destroyed the environment and for reasons that I do not elaborate on, instead of fixing the mistakes they made, they hike up prices on natural resources like water and harvest them at great risk and expense from other planets.
I am not a prophet, I am not willing to believe that humans in 2018 cannot figure out that pissing in the pool we drink out of is a BAD idea. Maybe those in power really don’t understand that all water on earth is connected and if you pollute this one lake or resivior over here, you pollute all water on earth. Or maybe they don’t understand that what you pump into, or burry under ground, sooner or later gets into our water supply. Maybe the people we put in charge are greedy for now and dismissive of later, or maybe they figure they can pay for every drop of water they use, even if it kills off the rest of us.
I wrote a utopian story based on a dystopian, or realistic, view of human greed and commitment to our own survival. We are masters of denial, just look at the patient with COPD who takes off his oxygen to smoke a cigarette. How many years have cigarettes been marketed for children? How long have we known that alcohol is a poison? What is the current cost of a bottle of water? Why are people denying climate change and rebuilding on land that will be underwater in ten years? Is that good for the economy?
Human beings like to dismiss facts that disrupt their personal story. Rich people like to force others to act as players in their stories, even to vote according to their ideas instead of their own. Stop being someone else’s puppet. Cut your strings, vote for your own interests.
If you are disabled or love someone who is disabled, vote for people who support disability rights and support, retraining and employment as well as healthcare. If you want to breathe free air, vote for someone who believes in science and cleaning and preserving our environment. Should water be free from toxins if it is delivered to your house? Should education be paid for by tax dollars?
Old people are not a burden on society, they already worked and paid into a system called social security. Politicians robbed the system, over and over again. Why are they in favor of making the old people pay for their crimes? I am never in favor of abandoning the elderly, leaving them to starve to death or kicking them out into the streets or some substandard home. If you are lucky, you will live to be old. How do you hope to be treated and viewed by the government you support? If you plan on being old one day, do not vote for anyone who talks about Social Security as an entitlement and acts as if it is a burden, a gift, or charity. That is a sure sign they are tricking you and complicit in stealing benefits you are paying for.
Somehow we have come to vote for people who want to stop “those people” from doing this or that. To be clear, abortion, gay marriage, birth control, marijuana…
We are voting for restrictions on some, privilege for others, only that always goes badly. This is America, choose for yourself, but let others do the same. Do you want to live in a dystopian world? If not than vote for your interests and cut the strings people have used on you before. Look at your life and decide what is important to you, then vote in your own interests.
