NewEarth
In the beginning of Gordon’s Pride, readers find out that earth 🌏 has a problem, it has toxic clouds, acid rain, radiation bursts, and all kinds of environmental issues that make survival hard. Clean drinking water costs a lot of money and industry has already started harvesting resources from other planets and bringing them to earth.
According to the foreword, EarthCorp, an international conglomerate, had a bit of a disaster in one of their harvesting projects, so to repair their reputation as being anti environmental, they came up with a plan to profit from an environmental colony expedition. That colony expedition was to NewEarth.
The new planet was a pristine wilderness with clean air, water, and plenty of usable land. The. Corporation paid all the initial investments to bring a dedicated group of “Greenies” to the planet in exchange for 50% of everything they harvested or produced. Of course they did not pay for any extensive survey of the planet, but then nobody expected those Greenies to last more than ten years, much less into the second or third generation.
In the process of collecting volunteers, it became a source of pride and advertising for EarthCorp that they added people from every continent, speaking every language, so one of their requirements was that every couple had to have at least one person fluent in Universal.
