Hired over Text

For weeks I have been putting my resume out there, it might even have been for months. Who wants to keep track of frustration; but yesterday after I spent a lovely afternoon with my folks, I had a message. I texted back. I was instructed to find google hangout instant messenger.

Yeah, it did not come up in the App Store. I had some bad, frustrating moments while I got caught in a free trial snare of google suite. That wasn’t what I wanted, but I managed to stumble onto the right app.

After getting that on my phone, I messaged and started a conversation, which led to an interview, that led to an offer. By the time it was done; I had instructions for the morning. The position allows me to work from home, attend training when needed, but generally work eight hours a day at my discretion. It almost sounded too good to be true. I wasn’t positive that it wasn’t a scam.

This morning they sent me a check and walked me through my first e-check deposit. I am feeling more confident as I learn more and figure things out, but still leery. I googled the company and it checks out. I went on Glassdoor and it checks out there. Technology has certainly changed the employment game. Now I have to worry about keeping up, but I am willing to work on that.

The amazing thing about stepping outside my comfort zone is that it will be fodder for a novel. Who knows when or where it will show up, but I suspect the scene where the woman stares at her phone in disbelief before flipping it over and giving it a few shakes like an old fashioned etch-a-sketch is going to be funny.

Anyway, stay tuned for more on Julia’s adventures in the corporate daylight. It should be interesting.
