Head Space
People talk about headspace as if it were magical and visited only rarely. Getting to the right place to write involves specific steps; clean the desk, the room, set up my tea, clean out the keyboard. Make the chair comfortable, and write. The world falls away and there I am, sunk in my imagination.
Now – what do I do if the door is blocked? If the gateway is closed? That never happens. What does happen is my internal world can become dark, twisted, mean, biting, bitchy or even disturbingly sad. Every character can die, walls can crumble, the ground can shift.
Some days are days to write my heart out so my head space inside is clear enough to tell a story people want to read. Other days I am writing to clear my head enough to think. The trick in my case is knowing the difference, only valueing the writing of inspiration, and not doom and gloom.
