Eagle and the Seagull

At one point we were living in Ouzinkie, Alaska; a truly fabulous town. From our porch we could see an eagle’s favorite perch. She was newly mature, having just gotten her stark white head feathers and she would sit in the top of her tree calling out to the sky.

A seagul, full of confidence and mistaken identity would perch on the branch below her. It took a few days for the confident seagull to wear her down, but they began playing together. He chased her, she chased him. It was great fun to watch as they landed together. She made him look so small, but because of her love, he was pretty significant.

When male eagles came calling, any who shoved aside her seagull, as we started calling him, she rejected. One smart male made an effort to win over the seagull and he was the mate she chose.

The two eagles would perch together at the top of the tree and the seagull would be on the branch below them. The three of them would play chase in the wide open sky and even the male eagle would fly slow so they didn’t lose the seagull in the fierce winds.

When we left that wonderful town, the three of them were happily perched in the top of their tree, looking over the ocean.
