Don’t Celebrate

It may be unpopular, but there are things I think we should refrain from celebrating. That includes the impeachment of our own president, the assassination of a monster, the death of an enemy.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand the inclination, but celebrating seems wrong. It’s a bit like laughing when you witness an accident. I have some trouble with that too, often having to apologize for letting out a snicker or outright laughter before I can pull it back. But I know I shouldn’t laugh when someone else is embarrassed or hurt, it merely escapes because my reaction happens before I consider theirs. I always feel genuine regret afterwards.

Well the same can be true on the world stage, but consider for a moment how it looks to the rest of the world. That impeached official can be a beloved figure to some of our country, a monster always has a cult following no matter how terrible, and an enemy of ours has an entire following on their own side, willing and waiting to turn them into a martyr.

As Americans we need to consider other sides and not just our own. Because we live in a country divided, our neighbors often hold opposing views about who is a monster and enemy and who is a savior and friend. Getting along with our neighbors allows us to have peace at home and almost everyone agrees that peace is more pleasant than outright hostility. As for the common enemies of America? In our divided nation I am not sure we have any, but that is a whole other problem.
