Doing Right
I always have at least one character who tries desperately to do the right thing. Now in a non fiction world we know that knowing what thing is right can get pretty murky. What is right for Joe is not always right for Sammy. Such is the way life goes for humans in our reality. In the world of NewEarth, the right thing can also be very hard to determine.
Hanna thought the right thing was to record her story and let circumstances kill her so the family sacrifice was made. That would put her parents and brothers back in good standing, or so she thought. Gordon had a different idea of what the right thing was. His idea changed several times in that first book.
Grabon certainly did his best to do the right thing, but the villagers did not agree. Mazy and Tam tried to do the right thing and that did not always work for them either. The difference in my fictional world is that so many people were at least trying to do the right thing. Or wait, are people always doing their best?
While I know there are people who are not doing their best in our world, most people think they are on the good side. Don’t they? Dotty was certainly doing her best to survive and keep the peace, bring a little joy( book 3). Her sister was not interested in anything but her own needs and wants, so she was always good as far as she was concerned, even while she committed murder.
Come to think more about it, I think people always believe they are doing good and others are not. That they do their best and other people are evil, lazy, manipulative, or wrong. In my books characters learn to look past their own wants and desires. I know a few people who manage that as well. Maybe it is something we can all make an effort to do, do our best and look past our narrow view of others and do better at trying to understand them.
Until our world is perfect, read to a happy place!
