Colors and Markings
In the NewEarth stories, the humans are either light or dark skinned, meaning they are all mixed lineage and race. The recruits that joined EarthCorps expidition and settlement were from all over the globe, spanning all the continents of earth. Making the humans various shades of brown, with brown eyes and brown hair, hardly worth more than a mention when writing a description.
The dragons on the other hand have some amazing colors and markings. Those colors and markings had a historical and scientific purpose as well as the legendary purposes that Mia explains in one of her stories. To a casual observer it is easy to see where the colors come from in the natural world of NewEarth.
Griss has the red from the red trees. Brom has the coloring of the green sky reflected on snow. Grabon’s and Thane’s colors come from the green foliage of the planet. Rok has the colors of the soil and rocks and Pit wears the colors of a coming storm in the sky.
As we see with Redseth and Starseth, youngsters inherit the colors and markings from their parents, often blending the two, sometimes one color combination is dominant and consistently shows up in a family line. The features of youngsters are incomplete, developing as they mature, adding horns and bumps, ridges and firm lines as they grow.
As a dragon ages, his colors mute and fade, his markings run a bit together. He or she grows more extensive cranial bumps and horns which change some of the features of their face. Like humans they have an endless variety of nose shapes, ear sizes, and horn placements creating features that dragons deem pleasing or more pleasing. Many dragons have vanity issues, claiming superior or inferior looks depending more on their personalities than on appearance.
In that way, like so many others, dragons are not that different from humans.
