I recently had a social exchange with a nice woman who used an expression of respect for me that I was unaccustomed to. She called me Momma. It made me wonder what expressions of respect the dragons might use in their exchanges with one another in different territories.

I also see how humans struggle with cultural expressions of respect, Sir, Ma’am, Dude, Bruh, Ms., and so forth. Many are offended when their own culture is not used, and enjoy the mantel of righteous indignation. I wonder how Grabon would react, or Heron as opposed to some of the other dragon council members.

Language is nuanced, filled with possibilities and as I develop the human and dragon languages of my many characters, new possibilities open up. I am not sure how they will play out in a story, but the idea is intriguing.

I imagine Tad and Hess are accustomed to all manner of address as they deal with interplanetary trade, smugglers, and explorers. The same is probably true for Pit and Thane who also dabble in trade, more so now that they are working with the brothers.

Pia would have been addressed in many ways as she traveled, performing for others on her drum, with her musician group. She might provide wise counsel for Grabon and Heron to accept the respect and overlook the language.

In any case, it is a fun thought for me to puzzle out the character’s reactions. As many of you know I have a number of complex developed characters. Enjoy the Spring/Autumn holiday season however you celebrate, and be sure to read to a happy place.
