Bernard

In Heron’s Bonds, Bernard and two of the visiting Miners, Hanna’s brothers, go into the woods hunting the “thief.” They do this for entertainment, sport and out of a sense of entitlement. After all the woman is alone and she presumably has no one to stand with her. Gordon goes into the merchantile and confronts not only Bernard, but the Miners, but later Heron takes Trissy’s and Jenny into the store and is almost surprised by her reaction. Is it because Bernard never found them so Heron assumed the man’s actions didn’t affect them. Or is it because he is so accustomed to being in peril that he did not think about how it affected a woman and child alone?
