A Story to Tell

Imagine being chosen to pioneer a new planet. You passed the exam, the physical, and your container is delivered by drone and the electronic key is texted to your personal communication device. They stopped calling them phones a century before, now they are simply PCD’s. The list of recommended items to bring reads like ancient artifacts. You were selected because of your ties to green living and your commitment to conservation, but you live in the modern world. With so many planets being exploited for resources that have been utterly depleted on earth, helping to preserve a planet is a privilege. But how does one plan for a life with no technology?

The combined chat rooms for other greenie pioneers had tons of resources to download. Someone had even suggested a light weight solar charger for certain battery powered devices. I wondered if adding that to the weight limit would prove to be worth it. Priority seemed to be seeds for planting, yarn, thread, needles, pins, fabric, food prep tools, medicine, basic hand tools, clothing, and containers. Learning to make things from scratch was an ongoing challenge, because arriving without the ability to make what we needed was not going to help any of us survive. The limits on weight combined with the space limits certainly made you think and rethink what you should bring.

That container is amazing. It has wheels so it can be a cart. It is sturdy enough to be the first home, and it is light weight. I am collecting things and packing them away in the container. So far the security has held and nobody else has gotten in there. I am spending all my resources preparing for this new life. I cannot afford to have someone steal my supplies. I better make sure it stays with me.

They are selling meal passes for on the ship. I can buy the meal pass or bring on food. My supplies are already close to the weight limit. I only have so much money and the cost of fresh drinking water is going up. I can’t do without water. Maybe I can work a few extra shifts and get some extra cash. I thought the passenger fee included meals, but I guess not. They want to squeeze out every drop of money from our wallets.
