Deception
Not all deception is bad. Grabon and Heron deceived all the humans and dragons they knew, letting the dragons believe Heron was a human pet and letting the humans believe that Grabon was a dragon pet. It wasn’t until they were both safe with Grabon claiming his territory that the truth began to come out. By then Heron and Grabon were in a position to defend themselves and one another from outside threats. And it didn’t take long for those threats to start coming in pretty regularly. Dragons after all, considered themselves the favored species of the planet, superior and bonded in her power. Humans on the other hand consider themselves more intelligent, more capable and the chosen species of the planet where before all the planet had to choose was the dragons.
While the similarities are stark between the two species most dragons cannot see past short noses and lack of wings. The humans, on the opposing side of the argument view dragons as beast like in their nakedness and they eat raw food. Without some guidance they would either choose not to interact or the likelihood of a conflict would grow with each encounter. Building a way and means for the two species to interact and learn something about one another seemed like the best path. Both species were excellent at self deception in order to continue the myth of species superiority.
Other deceptions don’t turn out as well. They are especially bad when attempted between mates. Heron learned the hard way that withholding from his mate, Trissy, was destructive. What other deceptions have you noticed in the stories? We’re they good or bad? What were the outcomes?
