Family

One of the fun parts of building a world is deciding which elements of existence are most important. Among those many elements, I chose family to highlight. Naturally it emerges early in Gordon’s Pride.

“I cannot eat your food” Hanna protested.

“Our food. We are family now. You will eat with me every day for the rest of your life.”

This stresses not only that Gordon believes that family eats together, but that his family has shared property and resources. We all know that family can be the best resource in the world, a source of strength and comfort; but it can also hold the greatest sense of betrayal. Poor Hanna felt that betrayal in the worst way possible. Gordon does what he can to help her believe that her first family’s betrayal is not about her, but about them.

“They were your family and no, you shouldn’t have told them [about the gold]. They didn’t value you, so why should you die to prove your worth to them? It makes no sense,”

As an author, being able to bring forth what I think of as key elements of my world is exciting and thrilling. There are hundreds of quotes and sections of the stories that talk about family. Can you find one?
