Cold Recovery
I know people who refuse to medicate a cold or the flu. I am not sure how they manage, but I firmly believe in treating symptoms. I despise being forced to surrender to some foul bacteria or virus and relinquish my daily plan. That being said, I am guilty of spreading disease. When it is obvious I belong at home, I continue to follow my routine.
As a teacher, for all those years, it was expected, encouraged. The penalties and demands for a teacher to stay home sick are crazy. Another price for a job of service, teachers must provide a comprehensive class, by minute plan for a stranger to walk in and follow. In my experience writing sub plans can take as long as 4 hours to cover for one day. Talk about a deterrent.
Now for the first time in my life I really can be sick, no penalty. It feels strange, but I still take the medicine, beat back the symptoms, and do as much as I can. As I recover from this NewYear flu, I am careful not to work on the manuscript until I am well enough to maintain my concentration. It seems so strange to slow down.
I remember being so grateful for Mary Ellen’s obligatory “3-day lesson plans”!! They were an effort to do,
but, oh! the comfort in knowing they were there, if needed!
