Equality
You may have noticed the theme of equality running like a preschooler clutching sharp scissors through my stories.
In order to be allowed to survive, both Grabon and Heron had their turn at playing the pet. Heron would not have been treated with any standing or rights by the dragons, seen as merely a beast. If he proved his connection and intelligence, they might have called him an intelligent beast.
Would humans have treated Grabon any differently? Maybe they would have tried to kill him and ask questions later. Humans can be like that. If they had discovered his intelligence and connection before they acted against him, it might have split the human population based on support and acknowledgment of a species that in turn would not accept humans.
Gordon was clearly ostracized because of his size and power, he made others uncomfortable, so he should conceal his strength. He established his own farm at a young age farther out than any other human had ventured. Later others came close, hoping for his protection, but keeping him at a wary distance. He was certainly not treated as an equal.
Hanna was treated unequally because her family had rejected her. Jamie and Janie were not treated as equals because of their profession.
Porter was treated like he might erupt into violence until he learned to conceal his power, even from himself.
Do you think it was better for the dragons? What about sex discrimination? The dragons sort by dominant and submissive personalities, the humans still have some sexual role model issues. As the two species come together in Grabon’s territory, are humans and dragons going to be treated equally? Those in the clan, those visiting? What about the humans who work and come into the market and live in the territory? How is Grabon, who is fair minde, going to reconcile the needs of dragons and humans and come up with something equal?
You’ll have to read more of the series to find out…
