Excitement on the Farm
Shawn and I had just finished eating dinner. A favorite of ours, boneless ribs broiled then slow cooked in the crockpot with BBQ sauce until they are falling apart-gooey and sticky, along with mac and cheese and pickles. Feeling over stuffed and lazy I answered the phone. Our neighbor, friend and landlord had trapped a copperhead snake under a shovel but she was not enthusiastic about getting bitten or letting it get away and she had no way to kill it. Could we come help?
After unloading the scooter for Shawn, we tend to store it in the back of the truck, we grabbed another shovel and ran over. Due to mechanical issues, the truck needs to stay put, so we were transporting ourselves the old fashioned way.
Now I have many talents and am good at many things, killing is unfortunately not one of them. I can reload a gun, hold things steady and assist in a number of ways, but cutting off a snakes head is just not in my lexicon. That being said, I could hold it still while someone else wielded the knife. Snakes have a lot of instinctive fight to survive, even after their heads are removed. It fought to the very end. Fortunately we avoided venom and all other unpleasantness and my roll, holding steady was fulfilled. Not everyone can be the hero.
