Love and Life

The notion of romantic love is not dead in the NewEarth Series, it is just transformed by conditions. Among the settlers, being left without a helpmate is a death sentence not only for the partner left behind, but often for children. Among the dragons who link their lives and power, if one partner dies, they both do. That transforms the notion of love to interdependence. As humans gain the ability to link lives, the notion of family love will complete its transformation. Dragons still court their mates, they give gestures of affection and love and there is plenty of passion and fondness between them, but they separate desire from commitment.
